What should I submit with my item for valuation?

We’re excited to help you with your valuation! When you send in your item, please include our submission form, which you can easily find on our website. If you have any relevant paperwork—like previous valuations, purchase receipts, service history, or certificates—please send those along too. For watches, we’d love to see the original box, but if you’d prefer not to send it, don’t worry! Photocopies or images will work just fine. And even if you don’t have all this information, we’re still happy to provide a valuation for you.

For our trade customers creating bespoke items, please share as much information as you can, such as carat weights, known grades, and manufacturing prices. The more details, the better we can assist you!

What can you value?

At Birmingham Assay Office, we’re delighted to help you with valuations for a variety of items! We can provide valuations for jewellery, watches, silverware (like trophies, canteens, trinket boxes, and more), chains of office, Sovereigns, Krugerrands, and even precious metal pens. Just a heads-up: we value sets as individual items to ensure each piece gets the attention it deserves.

However, we do want to clarify that we don’t value clocks, including carriage clocks. For Sovereigns, half Sovereigns, and Krugerrands, we focus on valuing them based on their precious metal content. If you’re looking for a valuation based on rarity, we recommend reaching out to a coin specialist.

If you have an item made of ivory, coral, or anything else not mentioned here, please feel free to contact us! We’d love to hear more about it and confirm if we can assist with the valuation.

Can we get an updated valuation without sending the item back in?

We completely understand the convenience of wanting an updated valuation, but unfortunately, we do need to see the item again to provide an accurate assessment. As proud members of the National Association of Jewellers, we follow their guidelines closely. This means we must physically examine the item to ensure our valuations are precise and up to date.

When we create a valuation, it reflects the condition of your item on the day it was assessed, and our valuers take the time to check its condition, as this can impact its value. Rest assured, we’re committed to giving you the most accurate and trustworthy valuation possible, so your item deserves that close attention!

How often should I get my item valued?

We recommend checking in with your insurance company about your item’s valuation every 3 to 5 years. While we can’t provide a one-size-fits-all answer, it’s important to ensure that you’re adequately covered and that all your documents meet your policy’s requirements. If you’re switching to a new insurance provider, they might also request a fresh valuation, so it’s a good idea to check with them about their specific needs. Your peace of mind is what matters most!
