How long does a registration last?
Your registration at Birmingham Assay Office is valid for 10 years, giving you a full decade of peace of mind.
What are the lead times for hallmarking?
We offer a range of hallmarking services to suit your needs:
- 1 Hour Service: Up to 5 items.
- Same Day Service: Items received by 9:30am will be ready by 3:30pm (100% surcharge).
- Next Day Service: Items received by 9:30am will be ready by 9:30am the following day (50% surcharge).
Please note, express services are subject to availability.
What is the minimum parcel charge?
The minimum parcel charge applies to each type of metal, standard, and marking method used in the process.
What extra marks are available?
We offer optional marks upon request, such as Traditional Fineness Symbols, the Date Letter (now voluntary), Common Control Mark, and Convention Marks (CCM).
Are there any additional charges?
Yes, there are a few additional costs which include VAT, handling, bagging, and laser marking services.
Will I still be charged if my items are rejected?
Unfortunately, yes. Even if your items are rejected, there are still administrative tasks involved, so the charges will apply.
Do I need to display a Dealer’s Notice?
Yes, it’s important to display a Dealer’s Notice. Not doing so could result in a fine of up to £5000, so make sure it’s visible!

Friday 8.30am until 3.30pm
When driving to Birmingham Assay office please note:
- For Customer drop off and collection please use Moreton St
- For Visitors please use main entrance on Icknield St
- Moreton Street – connects Pope Street and Carver Street.
- Pope Street is one way
- Carver Street is one way and Moreton Street can only be accessed by turning right
