Patch testing is a common method used by dermatologists to pinpoint the causes of allergic reactions on the skin. According to the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies (ESSCA), which collects data across Europe, there has been a significant prevalence of skin allergies:
- 23.4% of the EU population is sensitised to nickel
- 9.3% to cobalt
- 5.6% to chromium
Similarly, the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) found that 19.5% of individuals tested showed positive reactions to nickel, 8.4% to cobalt, and 4.1% to chromium.
